Can A Wedding Dress Be Dry Cleaned?
Wedding gowns should be cleaned as soon as possible after use. As is the case with other garments, stains and soiling on wedding gowns stand the best chance of complete removal when they are fresh. Even though no process or storage method can guarantee against yellowing, mildew or fabric deterioration, here are some tips from White Star Dry Cleaners that brides can take to protect their gowns:
- Store your wedding dress in a cool, dry place in your home. Do not store your dress in a basement or attic space.
- If your wedding dress is on a hanger and not in a box, sew the straps to the waistline of the dress to relieve pressure from the weight of the skirt. Wrap the dress in a protective white sheet or muslin covering.
- Fabric-covered buttons, pins, metal fasteners, sponge/foam padding, and perspiration shields should be removed and stored separately.
- Never store headpieces, veils, shoes or other accessories with the gown. Please store those items separate from the dress in the same storing conditions.
- Do not forget about your dress while it’s being stored safely. Occasionally inspect the gown to make sure it is not becoming damaged in storage. Stains not initially apparent could appear later and should be tended to immediately.
